Only Offering the Best at What You Do

BY JASON ST CLAIR

Some businesses are toying with the idea of only offering their best products and giving the kibosh to the rest of their offerings. An example that I previously talked about was Chevy doing away with many of its smaller vehicles that was in their lineup. On the face Chevy sold it to their investors as a cost cutting maneuver. What in reality this was, Chevy going with their best sellers and really honing in on those offering and making them the best they could be

Chevy decided to use the available resources that they have and keep their top talent, which may have been working on other products, to really sharpen their blade on their best sellers so to speak. For example, instead of having decent vehicles like the Buick Lacross, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, The Cruze, The Impala and the Chevy Volt. The idea is that Chevy will now offer only their best and exceptional vehicles in their lineup. For example, their SUV line, their Pickup line and their sport vehicles. The Silverado, Blaze and Corvette come to mind right off the bat.

Another example of a business honing in on what they do well is a restaurant called BBQ Chicken is NYC. They offer a total of 7 menu items and they usually have a hard time keeping their food out for customers to buy. This restaurant has their food precooked and available just to pick out a la carte. Customers come in, grab their food, sit down and eat and leave. In and out, little employee interaction rather than the checkout register. BBQ Chicken honed their products that they know they do well and offer them. In doing so BBQ Chicken has created a wildly successful business.

On that same note, I don’t know if any of you are familiar with Dim Sum, Dim Sum is a style of Chinese cuisine. It is prepared as small bite-sized portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on a small plate. So, some smart restaurant owners realized how popular their one item on the menu was and decided to make a restaurant only offering Dim Sum. The idea was to only offer what some customers wanted and nothing else. Why this is ingenious is Dim Sum is so low cost and the profit margin is big!
